South Korea (2015)

At 16 years old, if you had told my sister and I that we would be spending a large factor of our early adult lives craving anything and everything Korean. Our eyebrows would have joined our hairline. However, alike with majority of eastern civilization we have fallen victim to the ominous Korean (Hallyu) Wave and I guess, looking back 2 years ago there were signs of a slow descent.

South Korea to us growing up, was merely a state of North Korea that had been inhabited by the influence of the United States. Boy, if I could go back and slap myself I would. I mean we did have two friends from our middle school that were from Busan (Korea) so we knew from an early age not to discriminate based on stupid televised misconceptions.

(Anyway back to the topic.) The Hallyu Wave describes the sudden spread of awareness of Korean culture. At first the wave spread among Asia and correlated with the popularity surrounding Korean films and melodramas. But through the power of social media and Youtube, it now refers to the global spread of Korean culture through KPop, Kdramas, Kfilms, technology (Samsung and LG), cuisine (kimchi and soju) and Korean hallyu stars (Korean entertainers who attract international attention.)

Rose and I had always been plugged in with the latest television shows, what was hot on TV and who was hot on TV. Which often helped us build relationships with other fans, or people who looked for something to talk about. There would never be a dull conversation, at all. In the present day today, Rose is apart of a community of other Korean fans here in New Zealand (whereas I prefer to be plugged in with the people around me).

Julia Gillard, the former Prime Minister of Australia even went as far to hint that maybe the world will end via a total triumph of KPop. Not only that, but dating back since the 90's there have been many recorded anti-Korean articles stating that the Korean Wave will eventually take over Western civilization. Which, most likely will probably happen, might as well get cozy right?

The most fascinating thing about Korean dramas for me (Addy), is that they know when to not ruin the series with a sequel/second season. They're essentially 17-20 hour movies (if you play episodes back-to-back like I do), directed and written by 1-3 people. Which is completely different to the western entertainment world where even one song is written by more than 8 people. So, say for example Pretty Little Liars has I think 4 seasons? (Not a fan) and they still havent managed to find the bad guy. I know for a fact, a show like this would not suffice for most Korean fans, hence why I have ditched the teenage regime of 'hot guy, no storyline' television binges.

Anyway, I hope this brief post on South Korea helps indicate the massive entertainment world that is just brewing to take over the western world.
